I took the family on vacation to the Dominican Republic this year; a working vacation that is. Lessons learned:

1 - Trust your home-based team to be able to cover for you.
2 - Plan for travel delays.
3 - Don’t assume your cell phone will work outside the US.
4 - It is OK to walk away from BlackBerry for half a day.
5 - Never travel without a flash drive.
6 - Convert cash to travel country currency before you leave US.
7 - Many 3rd world countries DO NOT have free hot spots.
8 - Arrange to have grass cut.
9 - Never stop asking wife to travel light.
10 - Gauge yourself - before and after vacation and learn to stay refreshed long after your return.
